Q&A with Ariel
Originally UPS was attractive to me because a lot of people in our area work for UPS. Everyone I knew had worked there for a long time and spoke highly of the culture, the people, and opportunities. When I was looking for internships, UPS stood out to me and I wanted to learn more. Throughout the interview process, I learned all the ways you can grow and learn through UPS. I felt it was a good place for me to grow professionally and so far, it’s been a really great experience!
I was hired on for SMB (Small Medium Business) sales and then was moved over to healthcare. I’ve been able to tap into healthcare marketing, sales, and solutions. I’m currently working with marketing.
Professionally, I’ve learned a lot about time management, communication, and how to work with others. I received great training on UPS Healthcare products and services. I’ve also been able to learn a lot about the sales processes. I enjoyed seeing the way UPS handles sales and how different managers approach different clients. I’ve also been able to improve my Microsoft skills and grow my network, meeting people, hearing about their experiences, and getting their advice.
My biggest tip would be to not be afraid to put yourself out there. I’ve been able to talk to presidents, vice presidents, and directors at UPS. For projects, ask for more work or to be included on more calls for different projects. A lot of times people will send stuff to do or will let you shadow their strategy calls. Seeking opportunities and expanding your network is helpful.
Coming in as an intern you expect to be bottom of the totem pole, just in the shadows doing your work. At UPS, it’s been the opposite of that. People are excited to meet us. One of our project managers told us she has tons of people that want our feedback on their projects. UPS really values and treats everyone equally. There are opportunities for everyone no matter what job you’re doing, what role you’re coming from, where you’re coming from, or your background. I think that’s exciting and makes it really encouraging to work here.
First and foremost, you really get to see that beginning to end in a project. We’re doing some of the background work with researching, making Excel graphs, and laying that groundwork. Then my manager will tell us this is what happened with your work, this is how it was used. It’s been interesting seeing it go full circle. Secondly, because this is my first internship and I’m interested in getting back into sales after college, I’ve been able to learn a lot. Even projects that aren’t the biggest for a project manager, I’m still able to gain a lot from. I’ve been able to gain professional experience from every single project and I’ll be able to apply that in my full-time role.
My career goal is to work in sales, hopefully moving up and possibly becoming an account executive or director. I constantly want to be learning and pushing myself to be the best salesperson I can be. UPS promotes within—everyone you talk to has been given opportunities to move teams, roles, or to a completely new department. UPS can give me the ability to flourish and has so many different resources to educate myself and enhance my skills.
UPS is unique because they’re giving you meaningful work and they want to invest in you and your future. A lot of companies hire interns to fill the gaps or possibly have them to do the tasks they don’t want to do. UPS teaches you and prepares you for a full-time role. This is reflected not only in their culture but also in the intern work we’ve been given. You can see that people really care and want you to succeed. I think that’s special and something that really stands out to me.
