Meet Team UPS

Daniel N.

Procurement Intern

As a Procurement Analytics Intern, Daniel is researching methods to streamline customer interactions and minimize costs. Getting to work with developing technologies, notably cloud data platforms, was a big factor in his decision to intern for UPS. He also values the company culture: "I really like how once a week we have our team meetings; we all go to lunch together and really get to know each other outside of work.”

UPSer Daniel N.

"I think what really helps is being able to show that you have your own voice within your team and also being able to explore outside of your team."

Q&A with Daniel

What attracted you to UPS?

I was attracted to UPS by their use of emerging technologies, specifically cloud data platforms.

At a high level, can you tell us about your internship role?

My main function is to help the procurement team find ways to simplify interactions with customers and reduce cost on both of our ends.

What has your internship/co-op given you the opportunity to learn so far?

I’ve learned how to be a lot more innovative and adapt to situations and wrinkles that may come up. I’ve also been able to adjust and pivot as my manager might throw a new layer into the project goals.

Share some tips for making the most of your UPS internship, such as networking with other interns and learning about the company's culture.

I think what really helps is being able to show that you have your own voice within your team and being able to explore outside of your team. Get to know people and different functions and really understand all the moving pieces that go into UPS as a whole.

What do you enjoy the most about UPS’s company culture?

I really like how once a week we have our team meetings. We all go to lunch together and really get to know each other outside of work—what our interests are, what our families are getting themselves into—and really take a step back from the stress of work and enjoy the sweet moments that we’re able to have.

In what ways has your work felt meaningful thus far in your internship?

Right from the start my manager and the whole team gave me the confidence that the project I’m working on will save a lot of time on these monotonous tasks that are simple enough to complete. This helps open up their time and allows them to explore other more important projects. Having that reinforced reminds me that even as an intern, the work I’m doing is still having a great impact throughout the entire team.

What are your career goals? How do you feel your internship will positively impact your career goals?

I really like being able to help, teach, and explain technology to others, so this internship has been a great opportunity for me to explore new technologies out there. It also lets me share with my team and explore those advances together. Seeing people on my team who work full time and have been here for years finding stability within a group is a factor that I look for in a career and hope to achieve.

What separates UPS's internship program from the other internship opportunities you looked into?

The opportunity with UPS allows you to explore the entire company. You’re able to visit the packaging facilities and interact with all of the different teams within the company. It seems like at other places you are very isolated within your one division. So being able to have that exposure and understanding of the entire flow is really a benefit to the whole internship experience.
